Ashton first reached out to us because she needed someone to care for her toddler, Johnny, when her due date arrived for her second child.

She didn’t expect Brandon and Rachael to become a steady, knowledgeable presence throughout her pregnancy.

With Brandon’s family‑practice experience and Rachael’s neuroscience background, Ashton trusted them deeply, especially when complications arose.

Hosting stretched Brandon and Rachael’s capacity in ways they didn’t anticipate, yet they could see God had prepared them for it.

As they cared for Johnny, they noticed early developmental delays and gently helped Ashton pursue assessments and services. Over time, they watched him make small but meaningful steps forward.

Even after Johnny returned home, the relationship didn’t end.

Brandon and Rachael continued checking in, supporting Ashton, and learning the value of patient, ongoing communication. They’re planning to host Johnny again later this summer.

This is the kind of relational care that shows what Safe Families is all about: supporting families through the strength we find in the love of Jesus.

On a Thursday morning, everything in Christine’s world collapsed at once. A sudden medical emergency sent her rushing to the hospital, alone and terrified, while her son Danny was still at his after‑school program with no one to pick him up. She called us for help because she had nowhere else to turn.

God was already moving as Laura and Tim, host family volunteers, were available and said yes to hosting Danny.

Danny, who has autism, was overwhelmed by the sudden change of plans and environment. He cried for his mom and threw up from the stress, begging to sleep in the truck in the garage because it felt safer to him than going into their home. Laura and Tim’s hearts broke as they watched him struggle, but they patiently stayed with him.

Liam, Laura and Tim’s son, near Danny’s age, sat with him in the garage, offering distraction and kindness. The Lord slowly softened of Danny’s heart and he choose a place inside to sleep when it got dark, waking during the night to check if Laura was still there.

By morning, Danny had slept in the recliner and changed for school, ready to go to his before school program at the break of dawn. During school that day, Christine found some extended family who could step in to take care of him. The crisis had passed.

Sometimes, just saying yes for a night is exactly what’s needed.

Laura said it best: “It’s not about the big stuff. It’s about standing in the gap. It’s about reflecting Jesus in the moments that interrupt our routines.”

When Kaitlyn and her 7-year-old son, Nate, lost their housing and were living in a small motel room in Portage, she did everything she could to keep life stable, from faithfully getting him to school without a car, applying for jobs, and seeking housing closer to family. She didn’t have friends or family to help, so God directed her to us.

Leona, a family coach volunteer, met with Kaitlyn and helped meet immediate needs such as warm winter clothing. Realizing she needed temporary support to give Nate more stability, Kaitlyn asked us to help with temporary hosting.

Safe Families volunteers Dustin & Laura welcomed Nate into their home, and what started as a two-week stay grew into nearly two months. They later shared how deeply they felt Kaitlyn’s trust and how much the experience stretched and shaped them, growing their gratitude, and giving them a meaningful glimpse into parenting.

Nate bonded closely with Dustin. Transportation was a major challenge, and volunteers from Valley Family Church stepped in to help, along with Jan from Haven Church, picking Nate up from school and finding fun ways to fill the afternoons.

Throughout the hosting, Leona stayed closely connected with Kaitlyn, encouraging her as she found a job, saved money, and waited for housing approval. When she was finally approved for an apartment, Leona coordinated furniture and essentials so she and Nate could start fresh and with dignity. Their reunion in their new home marked the end of the immediate need for support, but not the relationship. The connection between Kaitlyn, Dustin & Laura, and all the volunteers remains warm and ongoing.

This is the impact of community: a mother’s courage, a family’s generosity, several volunteers’ steady presence, and a child’s resilience coming together to create lasting hope.

No one should face a crisis alone. The love of God often shows up through His church and His people who come alongside a family in need at just the right time.
